Carhartt x Fela Kuti Capsule

Carhartt WIP collaborations are feverishly anticipated in the streetosphere, and the upcoming Fela Kuti capsule due to be released on April 4th has us on the edge of our seats..

Paying such discernible homage to a man who not only shaped and influenced, but largely created the genre of music known as Afrobeats, is a step in the right direction when it comes to western acknowledgement of Nigerian influence in popular culture, music and streetwear. Fela Kuti’s impenetrable moral code dictated almost all of the music he made in his brief 58 years on earth - he was a heavy critic of the oppressive regimes of the Nigerian government in the 70’s and 80’s, and was outspoken against the pervasive corruption and greed of the era, all through his music. His sound is a complex fusion of Jazz, funk, traditional West African chants and Ghanaian/Nigerian highlife.

The explosive colour theme of the collection is everything you’d expect from a Carhartt WIP music collab and more, allowing the Fela Kuti capsule to sit comfortably amongst some of our past favourites such as Moodymann, Neu!, and Underground Resistance. Alongside the clothing, Carhartt are releasing a limited-edition vinyl reissue of Live In Detroit, 1986 (but we won’t be stocking that unfortunately!). Keep your eyes peeled for emblazoned shirts, bucket hats and graphic tees commemorating this political iconoclast.
